Small Group/Big Circle Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely not. Your child is still assigned to their specific group of 8–10 campers (fewer for our Ducklings) with their specific counselor. That counselor is responsible for your child’s safety, hydration, sunscreen, and social well-being all day. This Small Group/Big Circle approach simply means that 2–3 of these small groups will travel and participate in activities alongside one another, giving the campers a larger community feel without sacrificing individual supervision.
Moving to co-ed age groups has actually allowed us to increase our safety and accountability in these sensitive areas. While the groups travel together, bathroom and changing times are strictly supervised to ensure privacy and safety. Supervision: Counselors monitor the entrances and exits to ensure accountability, knowing exactly who is in the facility and for how long. Transfers of Responsibility: Because we operate as a team, we ensure campers are monitored constantly during transitions between activities, leaving no gaps in supervision.
This is exactly why we love this structure! In a single small group of 10 co-ed campers, a child might feel limited if there are only 3 or 4 other boys or girls. By bringing three groups together for activities, that “friend pool” expands significantly. Your child will still have their specific counselor, but they will now have access to more peers of their same gender to bond and play with during activities.
No. While the activity area might have ~30 kids playing a game, your child’s “home base” is always their specific counselor and their small group. This structure helps campers who are shy feel secure (because they stay with their leader), while allowing more social campers the freedom to branch out and make new connections within the larger circle.
Not at all. This is a structured approach to programming. The groups rotate through the daily schedule together. It allows us to run bigger, more exciting games and activities that require more participants, all while maintaining the close-knit mentorship that is the hallmark of our camp.
