Interested in getting a great summer job or challenging career as a professional lifeguard? Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn teamwork, rescue and surveillance skills, First Aid and CPR/AED and other skills you need to work as a professional lifeguard. This course also includes the waterfront skills module, which allows you to lifeguard at a beach. Successful completion results in a 2-year certification in Lifeguarding that includes first aid, professional-level CPR and AED in one certificate. Digital certificate available upon successful completion of course.
This course will provide you with the following certifications:
Lifeguarding
Waterfront Skills (non-surf open water)
CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
First Aid
Required Age: 15 - Adult, all students must pass swimming requirements
Requirements for Successful Completion:
Score 80% or higher on 3 written tests (CPR/AED & First Aid, Lifeguarding, and Waterfront Skills)
demonstrate practical skills successfully
Pass final in-water skill scenarios
Course Requirements
7.5 hours of pre-course video training must be completed on your own prior to Monday 7/25.
In person training will take place at Camp Alvernia on the following dates/times: Mon 7/25, Tues 7/26, Wed 7/27, Thurs 7/28, and Mon 8/1 from 4:30-8:30pm each day (must attend all dates).
Course Cost: $400 per participant, paid to the camp office prior to the start of the course
This course will teach water safety and introduce participants to the duties and responsibilities of a lifeguard; however, this course will not certify anyone to be a lifeguard. It will build a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills in preparation for the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course when they reach the age of 15. It will also help strengthen their swimming skills and endurance.
After passing the tests, participants will receive a Junior Lifeguard certification. The Junior Lifeguarding course is a great way to teach children, discipline, teamwork, and the value of helping others.
Participants must be between 11 and 14 years old to participate in this course.
This course will take place at Camp Alvernia on the following days/times (must attend all):
Sat 7/30 & Sun 7/31, 10am-4pm both days
AND
Tues 8/2, Wed 8/3, Thurs 8/4, 4:30-8:30pm each day
$400 per participant, paid to the camp office prior to the start of the course
This course requires self-study prior to the first day. Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling is a mostly hands-on, 8-plus hour class in which participants learn best practices for operating a powerboat by doing it – with the coaching and support of a seasoned instructor. Includes rules of the road, close-quarters maneuvering and docking, anchoring, man-overboard procedures and person-in-water recovery, and open-water boat handling. It’s Driver’s Ed for boaters!
Required Age: 12 - Adult, all students must hold NYS Safe boater certificate or have been born before May 1, 1988. Your free NYS safe boater certificate can be earned online at: https://www.boatus.org/newyork/

July 19th and 20th, 4-8pm (must attend all dates)
$350 per participant, paid to the camp office prior to the start of the course
